Philadelphia, PA – A small plane carrying six people crashed into a residential neighborhood in Northeast Philadelphia on Friday evening, causing an explosion and setting several homes ablaze. The incident occurred shortly after the plane departed from Northeast Philadelphia Airport.
The plane, a Learjet 55, was en route to Springfield, Missouri. The six individuals on board included four crew members, a pediatric patient, and the patient’s escort.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, and several people on the ground were injured. The extent of the injuries and the status of those on board the plane are currently unknown.
The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
On the evening of January 31, 2025, a tragic plane crash occurred in Northeast Philadelphia, resulting in the loss of all six individuals on board and causing significant damage on the ground. The aircraft, a Mexico-registered Learjet 55 operated by Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, had just departed from Northeast Philadelphia Airport en route to Tijuana, Mexico, with a planned stop at Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri. The passengers included a young girl who had recently undergone life-saving treatment in the United States, her mother, and four crew members comprising the pilot, co-pilot, a doctor, and a paramedic.
Shortly after takeoff, at approximately 6:06 p.m. EST, the plane disappeared from radar and crashed near the Roosevelt Mall at Cottman Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard. The impact caused a massive explosion, igniting several homes and vehicles in the vicinity. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene to combat the ensuing fires and assist victims. At least six individuals on the ground sustained injuries of varying severity, with three treated and released the same day. One diner patron was reportedly struck in the head by debris during the incident.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched a joint investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Speculations have arisen regarding potential catastrophic engine failure or a bird strike, but no official cause has been confirmed. An NTSB investigator arrived on-site the following day to commence a thorough examination.
In response to the tragedy, President Donald Trump expressed his condolences, describing the event as a “tragic loss of innocent souls” and commending the efforts of first responders. He assured the public that federal resources are fully engaged in addressing the situation.
This incident follows another fatal aviation accident earlier in the week, where an Army Black Hawk helicopter collided with an American Airlines flight over the Potomac River, resulting in 67 fatalities.
The Philadelphia community mourns the loss of life and the devastation caused by this tragic event. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
